The Project
The Morocota Gold S.A.S mining project is located in the municipality of Gomez Plata, Antioquia. The nearest big city is Medellín, which is about 90km away, a trip that, on a car, takes approximately two hours.
The mining district where the Morocota project is located has been catalogued as veined. The mineralization has been located in the tonalities and granodiorites belonging to the unit regionally known as the Batolito Antioqueño (Antioquia Batholith). This unit is considered a nucleus of the central mountain range in the Andes. For the mineralization in this area, a clear structural control has been established with an E-W trend considered typical in the neighborhood, which also includes Red Eagle, Antioquia Gold and Anglogold Ashanti with their San Ramón, Cisneros and Gramalote projects, respectively.
The mining project has almost 3,000 hectares, 90% of which have been granted and correspond to seven mining titles. Two new applications have been made, upon identifying new areas with mining potential. The advance of Morocota in its tillage has permitted the determination that production will be in a fraction of the mining property, while exploration continues in other sections.
Production
The property includes a 60 hectare processing plant and tunnels, that according to the tasks of exploration, planning and mining development will allow the project initially a ratio of 50 tons / day, with enough space to grow in case it is needed. The plant has an energy and water supply, road access for any equipment, offices and camps, and its proximity to the municipal capital of Gómez Plata offers labor and access to a hospital.
The preliminary explorations of the project were concentrated in the areas that had old tunnels where traditionally, in Gómez Plata, a record of mining activity has been found since 1600. In the vicinity of the plant, more than 2000 meters have been developed in tunnels and 1044 meters of drilling and geophysics. Thanks to the identification and sampling of the structures, it has been possible to carry out a modeling of the deposit from which the mining plan has been developed, guaranteeing a supply for the plant.
The mining plan has initially considered the development and exploitation of at least four vein-shaped structures known as Molinos, Grillos, Hilo grande and Veta 2.
Exploration
Regarding exploration activities, preliminary mapping of the surface, and sampling of active sediments, mapping and sampling of old tunnels has been carried out, the latter being approximately 300. After observing the geophysics in this area, an Airborne Geophysical and Lidar Survey were carried out in the whole of the mining property. This will lead to identification of the areas with greater potential followed by soil and trench sampling for further detail. Finally, the whole property will be drilled and modeled. In an analogous way, we want to increase reserves in the structures mentioned above for production through drilling.
